I was rather pleased with myself that I had successfully avoided looking at the blooks labelled as sex diaries or novels. As one reviewer at Amazon wrote, "sex blogs by prostitutes and/or escorts are two a penny." I confess that I finally succumbed when I reported on The Sweet Venom of the Scorpion: The Diary of a Call Girl (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2006) by Brazilian blogger, Rachel Pacheco. But you have to admit - that was a pretty amazing story.
I went back and took a look at a handful of others that have also gotten a lot of media attention and discovered that they, too, have elements which lift them out of the two-a-penny category. So, having been down the road already, I figured, "what the hey," I'll do a series on sex blooks.
The blooks I've chosen to feature are Muzi Mei's Ashes of Love: The Diary of Li Li; Jessica Cutler's The Washingtonienne: A Novel; Ana Marie Cox's Dog Days; Anonymous's Belle de Jour: Diary of an Unlikely Call Girl; and Abby Lee's Diary of a Sex Fiend: Girl with a One Track Mind. I'm sure there are others that some of you might feel worthy of exploration. Give me a shout and let me know which ones they are and I'll follow up.
For my regular readers, those of you who are hoping to turn your blog into a blook and make a buck off, the implications of these blooks are:
- it helps to be a young woman [there goes half my audience! I don't know what your ages are so maybe I just lost more than half :-( ];
- must enjoy recreational sex;
- not care if your mother finds out [only one of the authors was able to remain anonymous - I think that even she was later outed];
- be able to write in a way which allows readers to identify with your travails, adventures, pleasure [most readers were NOT men].
